Twice-Told Tales

Twice-Told Tales is a short story collection in two volumes by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The first was published in the spring of 1837, and the second in 1842. The stories had all been previously published in magazines and annuals, hence the name.

Publication

Hawthorne was encouraged by friend Horatio Bridge to collect these previously anonymous stories; Bridge offered $250 to cover the risk of the publication. Many had been published in The Token, edited by Samuel Griswold Goodrich. When the works became popular, Bridge revealed Hawthorne as the author in a review he published in the Boston Post.

The title, Twice-Told Tales, was based on a line from William Shakespeare's The Life and Death of King John (Act 3, scene 4): "Life is as tedious as a twice-told tale, / Vexing the dull ear of a drowsy man." The book was published by the American Stationers' Company on March 6, 1837; its cover price was one dollar. Hawthorne had help in promoting the book from Elizabeth Peabody. She sent copies of the collection to William Wordsworth as well as to Horace Mann, hoping that Mann could get Hawthorne a job writing stories for schoolchildren.

Twice-Told Tales (1963) is an American horror film directed by Sidney Salkow and starring Vincent Price.

Production background

The film is based on two of Nathaniel Hawthorne's stories, "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" (1837) and "Rappaccini's Daughter" (1844), and the novel The House of the Seven Gables (1851), which had previously been adapted in 1940 also starring Price. Only "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" was actually published in Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales, which supplied the film's title.

Plot

Each of the three sequences is introduced by Vincent Price (in a voice-over). Price also stars in all three narratives.

"Dr. Heidegger's Experiment"

Two elderly friends, Carl Heidegger (Sebastian Cabot) and Alex (Price), meet to celebrate Heidegger's 79th birthday. They discover that Heidegger's fiancée from 38 years before, Sylvia, is perfectly preserved in her coffin. Heidegger believes that the water dripping into the coffin has the power to preserve. He tries it on a withered rose and it comes back into full bloom.

Twice Told Tales (album)

Twice Told Tales is the ninth studio album by Jamestown, New York band 10,000 Maniacs. It is an album that consists of many traditional folk songs from the British Isles. For this album, they team up with producer Armand John Petri, who had worked with the band since 1991, as well as producing their 1999 album The Earth Pressed Flat. Coming back into the fold is founding member John Lombardo, who had supplied the band with a cassette full of songs he loved, as well as putting together the arrangements. The band funded the project by using the online Direct-to-fan music platform PledgeMusic, which began May 13, 2014. Early promotion of the project included a concert held at the Reg Lenna Center For The Arts in Jamestown, New York, which was also streamed online for fans from far parts of the world to tune in. The pledge closed on March 17, 2015 and was released through Cleopatra Records on April 10, 2015.

At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, Twice Told Tales received an average score of 57, based on 4 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews".
